How to Use Fire Pits to Encourage Self-Improvement

The tools for self-improvement are always there in a person’s mind, lurking just below the surface. The key is to find a way to let these tools surface so that they can go to work. There are many things that can help this happen: A good talk with a friend, a walk on a beautiful beach, or even a long drive with a good tune playing in the background. Each of these things can help motivate you to improve different areas of your life. Some people want to improve their job performance. Others want to improve the way they communicate in a marriage. Some people want to improve the little things: Cooking, sewing, tennis, or other personal hobbies that make life rewarding. Whatever the area of self-improvement, something has to give people the motivation to take on the task.

That brings me to a very unusual idea for setting the wheels of self-improvement in motion. It concerns the outdoor marvel known as fire pits. You might wonder what they have to do with self-improvement, but as someone who has enjoyed their benefits for many years, I don’t wonder at all about it. I know how a fire pit can help people reflect on life and make changes that affect themselves and everyone around them positively.

A quiet evening beside a fire pit, drink in hand, can inspire thoughts of the future. Because of the beautiful surroundings and bright fire, the future seems bright, too. It gives me a place to go where I can get away from the world and appreciate an element of nature that when contained, is beautiful to look at. People are a little like fire. Under control, we’re beautiful. Out of control, we’re dangerous.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in self-improvement in any area of life to set up a fire pit in the yard and see where it leads you. If it works like it did for me, it will lead straight to self-assessment and onto self-improvement in almost every area of life. Don’t be afraid to let the family in on your secret place, though. They deserve the chance to experience its wonders just as much as you do. I believe a fire pit addition to any outdoor area will help just about anyone find more peace in life than they had before the fire pit was added to the yard.
