Building your confidence by challenging your comfort zone can be a lot of fun. For many people they get stuck in a rut in life and when that happens you can’t build confidence because you never try anything new.

There are many simple steps you can take that will build your confidence and challenge your comfort zone. Here are 4 steps or exercises you can do this week to build your confidence.

1. Make eye contact. Many people today don’t make eye contact as much as they should, and many people won’t even look at you in the eye, much less your face. A great way to build confidence is by trying to hold eye contact with someone longer than you are used too. This may sound easy but you need to try it. You will find out it is hard to leave your comfort zone, but once you get into the simple habit of holding eye contact longer you will feel more confident.

2. Sitting up front in meetings. Most people sit in the back of every place they go. From classrooms to boardrooms, it seems like people are obsessed with sitting the back of the room. Next time you have to go to a meeting, sit in the front row, get used to sticking out of the crowd. At first when you do this exercise it will seem like everyone is staring at you, but this is good. It gets you out of your comfort zone and will build greater confidence.

3. Speak up more often. Many people at meetings don’t say a word and only speak when spoken to. This exercise is another great way to get out of your comfort zone. Nothing makes you feel more vulnerable than putting your personal ideas on the table for discussion.

4. Smile big. This is one of my personal favorite confidence building techniques. Not only do you feel better when you smile, but people will start to wonder what is going on with you. Not only will you stand out by doing this, people will start to talk about why you are smiling all the time. No one needs to know the real reason, just you!

These four exercises are all simple to do but will build your confidence. Once you try these exercises to challenge your comfort zone you will feel your confidence growing automatically.

This type of reality shock may be a turning point where you discover that you have to depend on you.

The turning point for most of us comes when we realize we can improve our lot in life. The moment we accept that we are not controlled by outside events; rather, we are dominated by your own thoughts and actions.

It is at this point in time that most of us turn to some sort of self help.

Webster defines self help as the action or process of bettering oneself or overcoming one’s problems without the aid of others. Changing ones self.

The Four Types of Self Help.

Self help can be designated as one of four types:

1. The AHA or epiphany moment – where a person has a dramatic moment of absolute clarity and direction. Their life pivots and is never the same. Like the moment when an alcoholic hits bottom. It is the instant when a realization impacts your consciousness, and you know that life must change and only you can change it. It can be a moment when the solution to a problem, you’ve been struggling with, becomes crystal clear. You know without a doubt how to deal with it.

2. One on one help comes when you feel you can no longer handle the situation alone, you can no longer keep everything inside. You may seek counseling with a psychologist, therapist, or spiritual leader. Perhaps you simply talk to a confidant such as your best friend.

3. Group interaction. Groups emphasize face to face interaction. The act or state of solving one’s problems by joining or forming a group designed to help those suffering from a particular problem, such as Alcoholics Anonymous or other twelve step programs. There are many help programs through community, churches, social groups; or paid groups such as those for weight loss and so forth. Self help groups are voluntary. They are for the mutual aid and accomplishment of a special purpose. It is a group of peers coming together for common mutual assistance.

4. Individual self help can be accomplished by reading and reeducating your self. You gain clarity into a problem or situation and overcome it by yourself. It usually involves reading and studying self help books and doing research. Otherwise know as self improvement, self help refers to the acts of an individual to improve themselves with or without assistance from anyone else.

The term, self help, refers to any measure used to improve mental, physical, financial or spiritual conditions. By means of books or other reference materials.

It is the act of providing help for oneself without assistance from others.

Individual self help emphasizes change done by oneself, like coping with one’s personal or emotional problems without professional help.

I’ve personally participated in all four types. They are all beneficial.

I still attend meetings, conduct individual and group sessions and write self help Ebooks. Don’t limit yourself to any one.

Self help is the acquiring of information for the solving of one’s problems. Those of a psychological nature, without direct supervision of professionals or experts. Independent reading, joining lay groups pertaining to your problem.

Read a book, an article, or take a home study course that offers information or counseling intended to be personally beneficial or profitable IE: self help books.

The best way to bring about change and self improvement is to begin.

Albert Einstein said:
“Nothing happens until something moves.”

The healthy spirit of self help serves to raise people from despair.

It advances them in intelligence, virtue, and spiritual growth.

Four actions you need to take before you set out on the road to self help:

1. Forgive yourself
2. Forgive others
3. Accept yourself
4. Accept others

Jim Rohn:
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plans. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.”

Whichever type or types of self help you choose it should:

Be beneficial not harmful
Improve your attitude
Positively change your behavior
Improve your environment
Educate your subconsciousness
Enlighten your consciousness
Include self forgiveness
Bring about self acceptance
Improve your self esteem

Summary

Apply what you learn and make real the life you’ve always dreamed of living.

Too often we limit ourselves. How sad, when we could learn to live extraordinary lives.

Never be late to your job: Late to the job can be one of the reason for your termination. So make a habit of waking up early. This self improvement habit can make you succeed.

Make a gap from backstabbing people in the office: Always retain your temper from backstabbing people at the right level. Never contend with your office mates since it will be another reason for firing you.

Find the root of the problem: You have to get to the root of what is causing your unhappiness about where you are and what you’re currently doing. The easiest way is The Five Whys. Ask, “Why?” five times.

You can make a particularly lovely stay for your house guests quite easily. Begin with cleaning your home the day before their arrival. Always start with the bathrooms and make them as clean as a good hotel. Set out fresh towels on the counter as this will make it clear these are the ones your guests may use. If you wish to add a special touch, set out a fresh bar of soap and guest toiletries as if this were a spa.

Next, prepare their bedroom or sleeping space. Remove clutter from the area and make the bed neatly with clean sheets. It is helpful to guests to provide them with a little storage, such as an empty drawer and closet space, and a small table clear of clutter. If you wish, you can leave a small welcoming gift for them beside their bed, such as a few chocolates. Many guests will need an alarm clock at some point in their stay.

If your guests arrive in the evening or after long travel, ask them first if they are tired or hungry. Do not keep them up if they are exhausted.

Your guests might rise much earlier than you or later. Prepare for either event. Let them know if they rise first they are welcome to make themselves tea or coffee or have anything else they wish in the kitchen. Set their likely needs out for them so they can find them.

If you wish, you can even do as they do at many bed and breakfasts and prepare them a hospitality tray. This is a tray that has on it packets of tea, coffee, sometimes hot chocolate, bottles of water, and sealed convenience packets of crackers, cookies, or oatmeal. It will also have a cup and spoon, and if it will be kept in the bedroom, it will have an electric kettle. Cover the tray with a tea towel to prevent dust.

Try to be sensitive to the needs of your guests during their stay. They may have other activities planned, but it will be enjoyable to plan some activities together that you both will enjoy.

Learning about one-self is a process, hence takes time and effort. It is the only education where one’s conscientiousness is developed reflectively – the mind studying itself. Needless to say, every person is unique and hence the thought process and entire journey of developing this skill is unique. Some of the obvious, though to some may seem subtle, benefits of understanding one-self helps to:

Maintain Control

When situations or events do not go as planned, or comes as a surprise, one tends to be overwhelmed, and at times enraged by it. It becomes overwhelming and at times bombarding, when lots of information is involved. On another occasion, the mere lack of these throws one into anxiety and confusion. Knowing how one operates enables him to manage his environment because he is able to stabilize himself. There are times when things happen beyond one could have imagined, and comprehending becomes improbable, leading to emotions getting haywire. Knowing oneself in such circumstances allows us adapt to the natural norm of behavior, and at the same time collect ourselves from being devastated.

Communicate Effectively

Communication is an eminent part of life. One needs to communicate with his families, friends and work-mates. All these segments of communication do not follow a monotonic approach. Finally, there are certain procedures to follow to be able to ascertain even the slightest benefit of knowing one-self. Nevertheless, there is no hard and fast rule, except discipline is demanded. The best way to learn is by reading or listening. Vilayanur S. Ramachandran, University of California, San Diego, posits the nature of self has five defining characteristics. One of them is the sense of embodiment and ownership of a body. Neurologist, Henry Head, introduced the term ‘body-image,’ which the brain is responsible for constructing.

Your sense of having a body involves the visual system, the vestibular system, and proprioception; the sense of body position and movement, a term coined by Charles Scott Sherrington in his book, The Integrated Action of the Nervous System. Proprioception correlates with dynamic body maps in the somatosensory, motor, and parietal cortices. Most notable is the primary somatosensory receiving area (S1) in the somatosensory cortex, where the sensory homunculus or “little man” resides. The neurons in this region are responsible for cutaneous (skin), visceral (organ), and proprioceptive sensation, as they fire to represent each part of your body–from the ********* to the internal organs–with the help of sensory input that travels from peripheral nerves, through the spinal cord, and into the brain.

With this complex and multifaceted construct of the body system, and ‘body image,’ it seems that humans would have a clear and definitive sense of their body self. Yet, the opposite is more often the case, than not. People have become disconnected from their body as one of their five defining characteristics. Psychologists and Psychiatrists call this dissociation. How and what prompts this phenomenon is multifaceted as well.

Imagine if every time you cried or were scared as a child, your mother was there to hold you, to comfort you and to guide you through the moment. No matter how scary or overwhelming a new adventure was in your life, imagine you knew your mother would be there in the perfect way. Maybe all you need is a word of encouragement, sage advice or just someone to listen as you sorted things out for yourself. Indeed, that is the perfect scenario.

Inside everyone, there is a piece of our Spirit that is the perfect mother. It is the piece of our Spirit that knows how to hold us and protect us and love us. Sometimes we lose our connection with that piece of our Divine Self. Perhaps it was not modeled in your life, and your connection with that part of yourself is weak and inexperienced. Or because of the ups and downs of life, you lost the connection. The soul essence that is a nurturing Mother Holding You, can assist you in reawakening and reconnecting you with this aspect of your Divine Self. It is like the Global Positioning System (GPS) network for that part of your Spirit that has become temporarily lost.

When you have a spontaneous or overwhelming urge to find ways to nurture yourself, you pave the way for a healthier lifestyle. Your nurture-seeking impulses are often the result of filling an unmet need; or a reluctance to risk being rejected or having unmet needs. As a result you may believe that satisfaction comes from outside of yourself. By taking care of your body self in a loving and gentle way, however, you use your desires to help yourself. Bodywork or eating well nourishes your body and frees you from your immediate concerns. You then have more time to think about the joys of being who you truly are and connecting to your spirit. Give yourself a healthy treat today that connects you to your Divine self, and you will discover the true meaning of pleasure.

A young lady approached me after a recent customer service seminar and expressed a need to improve her self-confidence. She believed her career prospects were limited by her personal insecurity. Furthermore, she asked if the Partnering Process would work for her. As those of you who are regular readers of this publication know, Partnering can help any two people become more successful at whatever they want to do. The good thing is that she is aware she needs to improve and has the desire to improve. So I, of course, told her to use the process and focus her plan on these keys to enhancing self-confidence.

Leave the past behind. Don’t get hung-up on past failures and disappointments. Often people rehash past failures and predict they will fail again. The question everyone needs to answer is: What would I do if I knew I couldn’t fail? A person cannot redo what they did yesterday, however, they can change what they will do tomorrow.

Remember the wins. As people progress towards their personal improvement goals, they need to look at the little successes and celebrate them. Obstacles will impede progress, as they are overcome, they will encourage greater confidence. It’s a good idea to keep a daily journal of accomplishments to visit when it feels like little progress has been achieved. It is experience, both good and bad, that builds confidence.

Gain knowledge. One of the best ways to bolster confidence is to equip oneself with knowledge. The more knowledge acquired… the stronger the self-confidence. Learn more about the profession you have chosen, more about your company’s
products and services, more about the people that surround you, more about your customers, and more about people in general.

Hang with the eagles. It’s probably easier to soar like an eagle when surrounded by nothing but turkeys. However, if a person spends time with people that are more confident than they are, it is quite likely they will improve their own self-confidence.
Like many folks, my scores on the golf course are better whenever I golf with players that are superior in skill. Maybe I concentrate more. Maybe I focus on my game more. Or maybe I just try harder.

Go for the low hanging fruit. When building self-confidence, look for opportunities to succeed. In the planning process, set attainable short-term goals to help boost confidence. It is important to steer away from uncertainty. For example: a person that wishes to enhance their presentation skills and overcome their fear of speaking might want to do some one-on-one presentations before trusted friends. The second step might be to join Toastmasters or enroll in a Dale Carnegie class. After developing their skills, then they may ask if they could do more presentations before customers or leadership teams.

Start each day off well. I will be the first to tell you this sounds a little ridiculous, but it works. Begin each day with positive affirmations about how confident you are becoming. And believe it! Literally look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself that your self-confidence is improving. These positive declarations will reinforce the other actions you have taken to enhance your self-confidence.

The Earl of Chatham, William Pitt, in 1766 said that “confidence is a plant of slow growth.” Self-confidence cannot be attained easily or rapidly. It requires determination, a well thought-out plan, and a Partner to provide support, feedback, and encouragement. Most of us are partially contented with our lives the way they are, but it’s hard to think of anything else when there are so many other issues to be considered.

Still we should aspire for something better.

We are all attacked by problems. But it should not bother us or even slow us down to becoming all we should be. Our dreams as children should continue to stay with us, short-lived though they may be or as long as we could keep hold to the dream. The old saying that you can not teach an old dog new tricks does not apply.

#1 What is it that I really want?

This is the age-old question. All of us have so many things we want to do with our lives yet so little time to even get through the day. Finding one thing that you are especially good at will help make that first small step to improving yourself. Conscientiousness is how you will know it is worthwhile.

#2 Does it make sense to really change?

The current generation has taken another approach in defining “self”, at least that is what the youth are saying. If you are lucky enough to have teenage grandchildren or nieces or nephews, you will quickly find there are worse things they could have than acne or maybe loose morals. So how does that mesh with your lifestyle?

History has taught us one thing… it is the life that we have already experienced. If you used to party in the Seventies where dancing was a big part of the party scene at that time, watch the younger generation clap their hands after showing them how to “really” dance rather than risk breaking bones while break dancing.

#3 Is there a bright side to all of this?

With volumes of things happening around us there doesn’t seem to be any room to even think about the proverbial light at the tunnel’s end. We can look at it as being something positive without undertaking a detailed investigation. So if the light turns out to be a train at the end of the tunnel, try taking it for a ride and seeing what’s happening in this world!

#4 Am I totally comfortable with everything that I’m doing?

There are always two ways, the easy way or the right way, when it comes to how you decide what goes with your pants, dress, tie, purse, or whatever. You don’t need to be a genius to make yourself unique. It is not necessary nor desirable for us all be the same in everything we do. Variety brings about many exciting and interesting questions to be experimented with.

#5 Have I done everything I could for myself?

Well, have you, or are there more things you want to do? Being discontented in all aspects of your life can be dangerous in big doses, but in smaller doses you’ll be able to identify and do things you may never imagined doing.

#6 Does where I am today make me happy?

This is not a fair question so let’s let it be an answer. If you love being a loving mother, father or grandparent to the kids, then ratchet it up a notch! The children will remember and love you eternally. The same hold true with everyday life.

#7 Do I appeal to members of the opposite ***?

There is no easy answer to this. However, if you get into shape, change the way you dress, change the way you wear your hair, or especially change your attitude towards people, you should know it will always be to your benefit in the way the opposite *** perceives you.

#8 How much better can I be?

Truly, in this case one can not have too much or too little, but the focus should be on how badly it is really needed. Unquestionably, every one would like to have tons of money, but the real question is how much would you be willing to work for it?

#9 What things motivate me?

Do you know what motivates you? This is an answer you will have to find for yourself. Since there are a number of things that can make us all happy, the hardest part is to choose just one. The very best way is to simply try it piece by piece.

#10 What, in actuality, makes you tick?

OK, really, what makes you tick? We all can be just pretty much anything we always wanted to be, but to think that reaching something we want is very difficult is already giving up before the journey is even started.
